What I Am Building and Why It Cannot Wait
I want to tell you something honest about what AVILA actually is, because I think the truest version of it sounds different from most brand descriptions, and I would rather just say the true version directly.
It is not a business I am building to scale and sell. It is not a side hustle I am running until something more legitimate comes along. It is not a creative outlet dressed up in brand language. It is something more specific than any of those things, and it is harder to explain quickly, which is probably why I have spent years finding the right words for it. AVILA is a founder-led platform for people in the middle of something. I am the founder. And I am always, also, in the middle of something. That is not a liability. It is the whole point.
The brand lives in three places. The first is the jewelry. I make small batch, handmade symbolic pieces in New York City, objects chosen for what they hold rather than just how they look. Each piece is made by hand and meant to be worn during the in-between times, when you need something solid while the larger things are still taking shape. You can explore the current collection here. The second is the writing. I have written three books for Gen X women, each one addressing a different stage of the same transition. Mastering Gen X Life is about learning to stabilize when everything you counted on has shifted. Life Redesigned is about choosing deliberately once you have stopped just reacting. And The Power of Reinvention is about editing your life with honesty, choosing fewer things more carefully and building something that actually still fits. All three are available in the AVILA Studio and they are meant to be read where you are, not where you think you should be. The third is The Thinking Circle, a monthly Zoom gathering for Gen X women navigating reinvention in midlife. Not a course, not a coaching program, but a circle. Real women thinking out loud together about the things that do not fit neatly into any other conversation. We are in our third session now and I can tell you without exaggeration that what happens in that room is the most alive thing I have built.
I am also, as of this month, starting a new full time role. I want to name that directly because I think there is something important in it, something that speaks to exactly what AVILA is about. I am not building this in ideal conditions. I am building it in real ones, alongside employment and the particular complexity of a life that is still in the middle of its own reinvention. I am not waiting for bandwidth to open up or for the timing to feel perfect or for some future version of my circumstances to finally make this feel fully possible. The work cannot wait for perfect conditions because perfect conditions are not coming. What is coming is more life, in all its density and inconvenience and occasional spectacular beauty, and AVILA lives inside that.
It was built for the middle because I am in the middle, and I know what the middle needs. It needs something real to hold onto. That is what I am building, and I am glad you are here for it.
